A partnership between Department of Energy's (DOE) Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) - Western and a group of Arizona utilities have energized a new transmission infrastructure project.
The Electrical District No. 5-to-Palo Verde Hub (ED5-PVH) transmission project runs 109 miles -- from the Palo Verde market hub near Wintersburg in Maricopa County, Arizona to the ED5 Substation in Pinal County, Arizona -- and is meant to provide increased capacity in the region. According to the DOE, the project will help "serve the state's growing electrical energy needs, attract renewable energy development to the area, and strengthen the transmission system in the Southwestern United States." "This newly energized transmission line bolsters the reliability and resiliency of the power grid while improving opportunities for new renewable energy generation in Arizona," said Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall. "With America's domestic energy boom, increasing energy transmission capacity is vital to continued energy development and to expanding access to affordable energy produced here in America." The WAPA teamed with the Southwest Public Power Resource group, a collection of public power companies, for the project. The $79 million ED5-PVH transmission project will serve customers in Arizona, Nevada and California and will add up to 410 megawatts to the grid. For more: |
