Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) said it will stop
burning coal at six units in three of its coal-fired power
plants.
The utility said it will end the use of coal at the 96-MW
Lake Road 6, the 170-MW
Montrose 1, 164-MW Montrose 2 and the 176-MW Montrose 3;
and the 48-MW Sibley 1 and 51-MW Sibley 2 units in order to
comply with recent U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency emission requirements. Lake Road 6 already has the
ability to burn natural gas and will switch to that by 2016.
Montrose 1 is scheduled to close at the end of 2016; the
Sibley units will shut down at the end of 2019 and Montrose
2 and 3 will close at the end of 2021.
KCP&L said it was more cost effective to shut down the
smaller units in order to comply with environmental
regulations instead of retrofitting them. Employees at the
plants will have opportunities within the company.
