Dunkin’ Donuts to Remove Sunscreen Ingredient From Doughnuts
Dunkin’ Donuts announced it is
changing its recipe for powdered donuts to eliminate titanium
dioxide, a whitening agent that’s used in sunscreens. The move came
after the environmental group As You Sow asked the chain to remove
the potentially toxic ingredient from its powdered doughnuts.
In 2013, As You Sow conducted
independent laboratory tests on Dunkin’s powdered donuts and found
they contained titanium dioxide nanomaterials (particles of titanium
dioxide at the molecular scale). The group said that safety of the
nanomaterials hadn’t been proven safe for use in food. They warned
the particles could cause damage to DNA and chromosomes, as well as
organ damage, brain damage, inflammation, and other harmful effects.
Dunkin’ responded by agreeing to remove the ingredient.
“This is a groundbreaking decision.
Dunkin’ has demonstrated strong industry leadership by removing this
potentially harmful ingredient from its donuts,” said Danielle
Fugere, president and chief counsel for As You Sow. “Engineered
nanomaterials are beginning to enter the food supply, despite not
being proven safe for consumption. Dunkin’ has made a decision to
protect its customers and its bottom line by avoiding use of an
unproven and potentially harmful ingredient.”
“The pressure is on for competitors to
follow suit,” said Austin Wilson, Environmental Health Program
Manager for As You Sow.
