Germany continues renewable energy push with wind contracts

Mar 12 - Syrian Arab News Agency

Germany continues efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity, with two German energy companies awarding separate contracts to Gamesa and Vestas for utility-scale wind power projects.

The Horst wind farm

Gamesa has finalized an agreement with DEW 21 for a 12-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Schneverdingen in Lower Saxony , known as the Horst wind farm, according to a press release. Gamesa will be responsible for all aspects of building the project including obtaining permits, managing construction, and installing and commissioning the wind turbines. The Horst wind farm will use six G97 2-ME turbines, which are scheduled to be up and running by November.

The Hüselitz wind farm

Vestas has also announced a deal with CPC Germania to provide 15 V112 3.3-MW turbines for the Hüselitz wind farm in Saxony-Anhalt . The order also includes an option for up to 19 more turbines. Delivery of the equipment will begin in the third quarter of 2015 and the turbines should be commissioned no later than early 2016. Vestas is responsible for installing and commissioning the turbines as well as providing service for 15 years.

German wind power

According to the German Wind Energy Association , Germany installed 4,750 MW of onshore wind generation capacity in 2014, a 58 percent increase compared to new capacity added in 2013.

As for offshore wind, by the end of 2014, there were 142 offshore wind turbines in the country with a total energy generation capacity of 528.9 MW. An additional 268 wind turbines were still under construction at the end of the year, representing a total capacity of 1,218 MW waiting to be connected to the grid.

German energy leaders anticipate 2015 will also be a strong year for increased wind energy capacity in the country.
