The spread of the Zika virus triggered a WHO International Emergency this week and has raised questions about the United States’ readiness to cope with a widespread outbreak.

In 2001, the U.S. Government conducted a simulated biological terror attack to test the nation’s preparedness. It was called “Operation Dark Winter” — the results were alarming.

Researchers discovered that a weaponized smallpox attack would immediately overwhelm the health care system. In the early stages of such an attack, hundreds of thousands of Americans would die and the government would be forced to implement martial law.
