Tesla Energy will supply batteries for SolarCity’s utility-scale solar plus storage project on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i.
Tesla’s 52-MWh Powerpack lithium-ion battery storage system will join SolarCity’s 13-MW solar photovoltaic project, helping to meet peak demand on the Kaua’i grid, which occurs between 5 and 10 p.m. after sunset.
Per a 20-year contract with Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), SolarCity will supply electricity for $0.145 per kWh.
The project, planned for 50 acres near KIUC's Kapaia power plant, is expected to be complete by the end of 2016.
