Leak forces shutdown of Susquehanna Unit 1 reactorThe Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.)
June 07--Operators on Monday disconnected the Unit 1 reactor at Talen Energy Corp.'s Susquehanna nuclear power plant from the regional power grid to address a water leak. The shutdown was prompted by a leakage from the seal on a reactor recirculation pump, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NRC spokesman Both Sheehan and Talen said the leakage, while radioactive, has been captured inside the plant's containment structure and will be processed by systems designed to handle such liquids. Susquehanna operators began the process of powering down the reactor late Sunday, according to a Talen news release. "Our nuclear professionals have spent the past week developing
various contingencies to ensure the safest and most efficient approach
to repairing the leak," said The company did not say when it expects to return Unit 1 to service. Susquehanna Unit 2 continues to operate at full power. Unit 1 was shut down about a week in November due to a leak discovered during routine equipment testing. The Susquehanna plant is in Salem Township, Luzerne County, about 75 miles northwest of Allentown. It is owned jointly by Susquehanna Nuclear LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. Susquehanna Nuclear LLC is one of Allentown-based Talen Energy's generating affiliates. -- ___ (c)2016 The Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.)
