A Homeland Security memo last month outlined a death threat from Venezuela against Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. – an "order to have Sen. Rubio assassinated," according to U.S. intelligence – The Miami Herald reported Sunday.

Former Venezuelan military chief Diosdado Cabello is believed to be behind the order, and Sen. Rubio has received enhanced security detail in Washington, D.C., and Miami, according to the report.

Cabello, a member of the ruling socialist party in Venezuela, has engaged in a public war of words with Sen. Rubio, who called Cabello "the Pablo Escobar of Venezuela" for his suspected involved in drug trafficking.

Cabello responded via Twitter, as translated by the social media site: "The first character that comes out to defend the terrorist attack is @marcorubio, we already know where it comes, you will be defeated a thousand times."
