The Navajo Tribal Utility authority announced it has finished the 27.3-MW Kayenta Solar Facility near Kayenta, Arizona. The development is the first utility-scale solar project within the Navajo Nation, Native News Online reported.

“The completion of this project demonstrates that the Navajo Nation is ready for large scale renewable energy production,” said Walter Haase, general manager of NTUA. “This is a huge step into the area of energy production and sales, as well as a gigantic first step toward enhancing the green economy for the Navajo Nation.”

The facility cost $60 million to build and employed nearly 250 during its six-month construction. The site was constructed on land held by the Kayenta Chapter of the Navajo nation.
