Trump to Congress: 'Do Your Job' on DACA

(CNSNews.com) - President Donald Trump's first tweet of Tuesday hinted at his administration's forthcoming announcement on the DACA program, which defers deportation for certain illegal aliens who were brought to the United States as children.

"Congress, get ready to do your job - DACA!" Trump wrote.

Trump is expected to end the program started by President Obama. But he's also expected to allow a six-month delay before the end comes, so Congress has time to pass a law giving the 800,000 DACA enrollees permanent residency in the United States.

President Obama was widely criticized for changing immigration law through executive action, when that power rests with Congress.

Some reports suggest Republicans may agree to pass a Dream Act, but only if Democrats agree to fund President Trump's long-promised border wall.

But at least one Democrat emphatically rejected such a compromise on Tuesday morning: "No," said Rep. Henry Cuellar (R-Texas). "No. They're two separate things," he told CNN's "New Day."

"A wall is a 14th Century solution to a 21st Century situation that we have. Are we going to still insist on putting money for the wall, when we have Harvey that's going to cost us billions of dollars in Texas? No.

"What I want to see is sensible border security," Cuellar said. "You know, make sure we have electronics, cameras, sensors, the right mixture of personnel. Make sure we that work with our neighbors to the south, Mexico and Central America, to hold off as many people from coming over.

“We've got to be smart on how we secure the border instead of just coming up with a 14th Century solution called the wall."

Cuellar also indicated it would be difficult to pass the Dream Act, given everything else Congress has to do before the end of the end of the year, with limited time to do it.
