How can supporters of competitive energy markets coordinate and accelerate their efforts?

This is the critical question to be put before the Convention for Friends of Competitive Energy Markets, set for June 6-7 in Washington, D.C. The question will be discussed as it relates to vision, policy, strategy, leadership, organization and resources, and outreach and persuasion.

The convention is being sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Energy Markets (CAEM), with several leading energy trade associations serving as supporting organizations, and an impressive roster of government and industry leaders will speak.

Supporters of competitive energy markets must begin to counter organized efforts to discredit the benefits of competition. Therefore, the convention program will provide market advocates with a thought-provoking agenda to inspire and motivate—but more importantly, it will allow like-minded people to come together and map out a course of action and begin to develop a community of supporters.

"We need a forum to discuss and debate the strategy and tactics for advancing and improving energy markets. I think it is time that supporters of competitive energy markets hold an annual convention to strategize, network, become motivated, and recognize accomplishments." —Branko Terzic, former Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) member, now director of regulatory services for Deloitte Services LP and a longtime CAEM board member.

"I am pleased that there is a ready community of competitive energy market supporters willing to engage in the difficult task of changing the status quo." —Paul Hudson, chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

"I am especially delighted by the participation of state regulators from states where customers benefit every day from competitive energy markets." —FERC Commissioner Nora Brownell.

The convention is scheduled in conjunction with CAEM’s Annual Energy Competition Leadership Awards Banquet, set for the evening of June 6. FERC Chair Pat Wood and Roland Priddle, former chairman of the National Energy Board in Canada, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Several other leadership awards will be announced at the banquet.
