"PlameGate" Is Hardly a Summer Squall

The case may also prove to be one more string -- albeit a very central one -- that, if pulled with sufficient determination, could well unravel a very tangled ball of yarn, and one that would confirm recent revelations in the British press -- the so-called Downing Street memo -- that the Bush administration was ”fixing the facts” about the alleged threat posed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in order to grease the rails to war.

Quenching America's thirst for oil

The United States consumes a quarter of the world's oil, compared to 8 % for China. Even with high Chinese growth expected in coming years, the world will not run out of oil anytime soon. Over a trillion barrels of proven reserves exist, and more is likely to be found. But two-thirds of those proven reserves are in the Gulf, and are thus vulnerable to disruption.

Roll out the barrel

Despite promises, producers are incapable of increasing extraction -- refineries around the world are already working at full tilt. In Iraq, attacks on oil installations continue to be reported, in Nigeria there is a growing threat of attacks on the foreign personnel of oil corporations, and in the Caribbean the hurricane season has begun in earnest.

Iraq is considered one of the biggest oil producers and exporters in the world. However, since 1980 its oil industry has suffered significantly from wars, sanctions, negligence and lack of maintenance, and, since the last war, from sabotage and looting.

Consequently the industry faces a number of challenges; but with the provision of security and finance it has huge positive prospects.

The Saudi façade

Three months ago, when gas prices hit $ 2 and oil was at more than $ 50 a barrel, the administration said relief would come because Saudi Arabia had agreed to increase short-term production, and would spend $ 50 bn to increase output over the next decade. Earlier, gas prices were climbing higher and oil hit $ 60 a barrel. Some predict it can go over $ 100, maybe as high as $ 200.

The significance of Iranian gas reserves

The prospects for profit are especially high in South Asian countries like India and Pakistan, where natural gas reserves are low and energy demand exceeds energy supply.

Some comments on the story Academic Study Discredits Ethanol, Biodiesel

There have been huge technology improvements in the ethanol industry in just the past 5 years. The heat recovery systems alone have increased efficiencies by at least 50 % in the past 3 years alone . I am sure that if the Professors were using current technology numbers instead of industry numbers of 20 to 30 years ago, the conclusions would be very different.
